Itinerary

Day 1: GABORONE – CENTRAL KALAHARI

Departure from Gaborone in the morning  and drive via Kanye to Ghanzi

Ghanzi is also known as 'The capital of the Kalahari' and is situated amongst a flat and featureless terrain, with bushes, thorn trees and grasslands coming alive in the rainy season.it has an altitude od about 900m above the sea level, It is some 200km to the Namibia border post to the east or 300km to Maun to the west. The tarred roads are excellent and Ghanzi is served by its own airfield. Ghanzi is also a stopover point for travellers en-route to the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve.

Employment in Ghanzi centres around cattle farming that supplies the Botswana Meat Commission with most of the required beef produce. There are also several RAD (Remote Area Development) settlements in the area, providing basic social services like schools and health facilities.

Bushmen (Basarwa) once dominated the region. Their survival strategies had been perfected over the centuries for living in such an inhospitable environment. They were joined later by the Bakgalagadi and gradually left to live in the Kalahari villages such as Ncojane, Matsheng and Kang.

After the Bushmen, it was the turn of Hottentots to settle in the Ghanzi area, tending large herds of cattle. In 1874, the first white settlers arrived, led by Hendrik van Zyl, a flamboyant character whose legend lives on in Ghanzi, as does the remains of his once magnificent house. Boer trekkers followed in the late 1890's, lured by attractive business propositions. It turned out that the farm leases had been fraudulently acquired from Tawana Chief Moremi in Maun by Cecil Rhodes' 'legal

Zimbabwe officially  the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked country located in southern Africa, between theZambezi and Limpopo rivers. It is bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest and Mozambique to the east. The capital and largest city is Harare.

What is now Zimbabwe was historically the site of many prominent kingdoms and empires, as well as a major route for migration and trade. The present territory was first demarcated by Cecil RhodesBritish South Africa Company during the 1890s, becoming theself-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia in 1923. In 1965 the conservative white minority government unilaterally declared independence as Rhodesia. The unrecognized state endured international isolation and a 15-year civil war between the government and black nationalist forces; this culminated in a peace agreement that established universal enfranchisement and de sovereignty in April 1980.

An ethnically diverse country of roughly 13 million people, Zimbabwe has 16 official languages,[3] with EnglishShona and Ndebele being most common. President Robert Mugabe is head of state and government, and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Renowned as a champion for the anti-colonial cause,[11] Mugabe is also viewed as authoritarian[12][13] responsible for Zimbabwe's problematic human rights record[14] and substantial economic decline.[15] He has held power since 1980: as head of government until 1987, and head of both state and government since then.[11
